New Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops (Ok Bob Stoops brother) did one heck of a job recruiting after taking the job with the Cats. Kentucky finished #28 in Rivals' national rankings. For comparison, Kentucky's five previous rankings were 62nd (2012), 61st (2011), 50th (2010), 41st (2009) and 57th (2008). Stoops' message to recruits..."we're combining Florida State's defense with Texas Tech's offense" resonated. And Big Blue fans have reacted with excitement to Stoops first signing class. The fact that UK's new coach could use his personal ties in Ohio and Florida to reel in three prospects from the former and nine from the latter is a good sign moving forward.
Sidenotes:
Georgia: After two straight trips to the SEC championship game, Georgia has given coach Mark Richt a raise and another year on his contract. The approved hike in total compensation from $2.81 million to $3.2 million a year will bring Richt's compensation more in line with other SEC coaches. Athletic director Greg McGarity says Richt was deserving of the raise because after guiding the Bulldogs within 5 yards of a trip to the national championship game. Georgia finished 12-2, improving Richt's record to 118-40 in 12 seasons with the Dogs. Richt has won two SEC titles during his tenure.
LSU: It appears that in 2013, the Tigers will have their fourth offensive coordinator in 4 seasons. Cam Cameron is thought to be the next offensive coordinator to run the Tiger offense. The question is whether the offense will look much different under Cameron than it has in the past. One school of thought is that the offense won't ever change dramatically under Miles because its his offense and any new coordinator will do what Miles wants. Many Tiger faithful claim a new coordinator is almost irrelevant.
Utah: Head Utes coach Kyle Whittingham has hired 65 year old Dennis Erickson to be his new offensive coordinator. Erickson is credited as one of the orginial architects of the spread offense. He's been the head coach at Arizona State, Idaho, Miami, Washington State, Oregon State, Wyoming as well as Seattle and San Francisco of the NFL.
Boise State: You got to like Boise State head coach Chris Peterson. Every offseason, his name comes up for seemingly every vacant coaching job. Every year he just says thanks but no thanks. Petterson said, "I learned long ago that the size of the stadium has absolutely zero to do with my or my families happiness. You're just going to trade one set of problems for another." I find it refreshing that Peterson puts family and happiness over ego.
